It's always exciting to see a friend get a book published. Even more so when that book shares a story you think others need to hear.
There are, I know, a lot of cancer memoirs out there. What makes this one different is that Deanna is both a theologian of the academy and an active churchwoman. She's not afraid of the big theological questions and refuses to resort to platitudes, but she can also articulate what it means to receive a prayer shawl, or receive words of comfort on a caringbridge site.
What also makes this story different is that it is truly about hope. Deanna has not been "cured" of stage IV cancer, yet she still lives a very full life in the midst of the uncertainty. She articulates what it means to receive healing even when the end of one's story is not written yet. That in-between space is where we all live, to some degree. She just has the grace to live it and write about it more intensely than most of us will.
